THE TIME OF
INDIFFERENCE

SYNOPSIS

Rome, present day. A few aftershocks for an earthquake in Central Italy, leaves a suspended atmosphere. Mariagrazia Ardengo (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) and her two children, Michele (Vincenzo Crea) and Carla (Beatrice Grannò), have run out of money. In the last three years, Leo Merumeci (Edoardo Pesce), a wheeler-dealer manager, who in the meantime had become Mariagrazia's lover, has granted her loans that have allowed her to pay back some debts and continue leading her altogether comfortable existence. Just back from a trip abroad, Michele guesses, also thanks to his story with a family friend, Lisa (Giovanna Mezzogiorno), that lurking behind Leo's apparent generosity, there is a long-plotted plan to lay his hands on the one and only valuable asset that has remained to the Ardengo family: the penthouse apartment where they live. Mariagrazia is too in love with Leo to pay any heed to her son, and so it will be up to Carla - who having just turned eighteen - finds herself on the receiving end of the selfsame Leo's morbid advances - to stir her family from the  abulic indifference into which it has taken refuge.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

This story leaves you in a state of precariousness. I consequently wished to update its characters, also in light of the evolution of those presented in Moravia's later novels. It can be said, however, that the selfsame writer in his "The Indifferent Ones." had entrusted to none other than Carla the role of being a bringer of hope and liberation, she being the only one capable of shattering the family's hypocrisy.

When one is not sincere, one must pretend, but by dint of pretending, one ends up believing one's own lies; this is the principle behind every faith.
